NOGA classifies every economic activity carried out in Switzerland along a four-level tree: section (one letter), division (two digits), group (three digits) and class (four digits). A restaurant falls under class 5610, a bakery-patisserie under 4724, a hairdressing salon under 9602.
It is the key that makes statistics comparable: establishment censuses, employment by sector and survival rates are all published by NOGA code. Without it, comparing two businesses amounts to comparing two labels.
The Swiss classification is aligned with the European NACE, itself derived from the United Nations ISIC, which allows international comparison at division level.
