STATENT

Structural business statistics: the official census of establishments and jobs in Switzerland.

STATENT records companies, their establishments and their jobs every year, drawing on the administrative data of the social insurance schemes. It covers the whole country and classifies every establishment by NOGA code, which makes it the reference source for counting competitors.

Two properties must be known before using it. It distinguishes the company — the legal unit — from the establishment — the place where the activity is carried out: it is the second that concerns a shopkeeper. And it is published with a lag of a few years, which makes it a solid photograph rather than an instantaneous one.

Its finest mesh is the hectare, which allows establishments to be counted around an address rather than across a whole municipality. Statistical confidentiality does, however, mask cells holding too few units.
