Switzerland publishes part of its statistics on a hectare grid: population, households, establishments, jobs, dwellings. This is what makes it possible to count what lies around an address rather than across a whole municipality.
For location analysis the benefit is decisive: the average of a municipality with 300 populated hectares says nothing about the density on one street corner. Aggregating by hectare allows a tailor-made catchment area to be rebuilt, following the real shape of the territory served.
Statistical confidentiality requires cells with too few units to be masked or aggregated: a hectare that is empty in the data is not necessarily an empty hectare on the ground.
