Average basket

The average amount spent per customer per visit; multiplied by footfall, it rebuilds turnover.

The average basket links market analysis to daily operations. Turnover can be rebuilt along two paths that must converge: top-down, starting from the households in the area and their spending in the category; bottom-up, starting from the number of customers per day multiplied by the average basket.

When the two estimates diverge markedly, one of the assumptions is wrong, and the gap usually indicates which. It is the best consistency check on a forecast.
