A municipality has three working populations: those who live and work there, those who come in to work from elsewhere — the inbound — and those who leave every morning — the outbound. The balance between inbound and outbound determines whether the daytime population is above or below the resident population.
It is a decisive and rarely examined indicator for lunchtime catering, bakeries, kiosks and local services. A dormitory municipality can show attractive demographics and empty its streets between eight and six.
The official commuter matrix also gives the main municipalities the inbound commuters come from, which says something about the real depth of the catchment area.
